about

In 1989-1990, Brian Marchese and his long lost friend, whose name won't be used until he is located and grants permission (we'll call him Doug), were best friends and musical partners. They were 16-17 years old. Brian wrote words and played drums--and messed around on whatever else was around. Doug was the real genius--he knew how to operate a 4-track and how to construct real pop songs. He also had a better voice so he sang more. As a rule, Brian wrote the words, did drums and percussion, Doug wrote the music and played everything else. Though they initially bonded over bands like The Beatles, The Velvet Underground, Love, The Grateful Dead and Syd Barrett, this album also shows their interest in the alternapop of the day like The Cure, The Smiths and XTC. Also apparent here are the future directions that the two were heading toward in their personal lives: Doug dreaming of the grit and grime of the big city; Brian just wanting to sit under trees and stare at butterflies and pet kitties. 21 years later, though they haven't written together since, these in fact are more or less the lives they ended up living.
They only made about 10 or 12 cassette copies of this album and gave them to girls they liked or hipsters who they hoped to impress (they were pretty shy and never went to parties). One mini set was played at a Unitarian Church. Two girls they fancied showed up and thus they decided to quit performance while they were ahead. A subsequent 5 song ep, recorded in summer of 1990 is lost to history. As is their 1988 debut cassette, "Quasimodo". That's all fine--this is their shining moment.
